Historical Background
Beginning in 1752, the Qing Dynasty sought to secure its vast northern and western frontiers in Xinjiang. To quell native tribal revolts and stabilize the region, the Qianlong Emperor launched major military campaigns. In 1758, he dispatched General Zhaohui to subdue the Dzungar tribes. This painting commemorates a pivotal clash in which Prince Cäbdan-jab, fighting alongside Qing forces, routed the Amursana faction of the Dzungars—preserving a dramatic chapter of 18th-century imperial expansion.
